Headteacher's Welcome.

Welcome to our website.  It provides up to date information for our current families, as well as giving prospective new parents and members of the wider community an insight into the life of our school.

We understand that choosing a school for your child is an extremely important decision and we warmly welcome visitors and invite you to make an appointment to see our school in action and find out more.

We believe that within the warm supportive family atmosphere rooted in our Catholic faith, we aim to ensure that each child has the opportunity to reach their full potential and develops a love of learning.

We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents and parish communities and strive to further strengthen those links.

History of our school :-  The Holy Spirit Primary School in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire opened on its present site in 1968 and continues a tradition of Catholic Education in the town. Bishop Robert Cornthwaite of Beverley established the first Catholic Parish in Heckmondwike in 1871 and Fr Stephen Dolan was to be the first Parish Priest celebrating Masses from a rented room in a house in Brighton Terrace.

It wasn't until 1873 that the first Chapel and school were opened on Darley Street.  Saint Patrick's School was built on a plot of land purchased for the princely sum of £374.  It was here that the Catholics of Heckmondwike worshipped and were educated until the opening of our present Church in 1915 and school in 1968.  The original Chapel and School were sold to the RAFA club in 1970.  The building had served the Catholic community of Heckmondwike well and laid the foundations for the establishment of a Catholic education in Heckmondwike.  1968 was to be the beginning of a new era and a renaming of the school as The Holy Spirit School.

In August 2015 the Diocese merged Holy Spirit Church, Heckmondwike and Our Lady & St Paul's Church, Cleckheaton and appointed Fr Nicholas Hird as the Parish Priest to oversee the new Parish of Cleckheaton & Heckmondwike.  Click on the link below to re direct to the Church website to find Mass times / Newsletters etc.

We try to provide a high quality education for the Catholic Communities in both Heckmondwike & Cleckheaton.  All we do is underpinned by our faith and the teachings of the Church.  We have endeavoured to encapsulate all that we are about in our Mission Statement. (A copy of which is available in the 'Policies' sub menu).

We hope that you enjoy our primary school web site and that your children enjoy their time with us and fulfil their full potential spiritually, socially and academically.
